Collection Details

SummaryThis collection contains AS paths for BGP beacons and control prefixes announced from RIPE RRC10 and seen from looking glasses, RouteViews and RIPE RIS. We announce the beacon and change the AS path prepending length every 3 hours for 34 hours. This data set is useful for studying how AS path prepending affects the inbound traffic control of autonomous systems.
MotivationTo provide the data used in the paper "Evaluating the Route-Level Effects of AS-Path Prepending: An Active Measurement" which is in submission.

Description
AS path prepending is a widely practiced, but poorly understood, method for controlling the inbound traffic of an autonomous system. We use an active measurement approach to study the route-level effects of prepending. This method injects beacon prefixes with controlled prepending lengths. We have implemented and deployed the measurement infrastructure in the RIPE NCC network. Using close to 200 vantage points, we can measure the effects on the AS-level routing paths based on a set of carefully designed experiments.

The active measurement infrastructure deployed in the RIPE network.

  1. In the RIPE network, we announce the beacon prefixes to the three RRCs with community values, specifying the prepending length for each link. We announce prefixes from the Linux PC moo.ripe.net using Lorenzo Colitti's Announcer tool.
  2. Each RRC in turn maps the community values with route-map and announces the prefix with the specified prepending lengths to the upstream.
  3. We observe the possible AS-level route changes from a set of vantage points in the Internet.
