Collection Details
| Summary | The collection contains a (n,n) router-level Internet map obtained using 130 vantage points and a total of 2.3M path traces. It is processed to filter errornous traces, resolve anonymous routers, and identify alias IPs. Alias IPs are obtained using ally and APAR tools and are extensively verified using DNS names and AS numbers. The collection contains the anonymized network map, as a list of edges, containing 2376 nodes. The average degree of nodes is 3.14 and charactristic path is 8.57. Path traces are collected from 130 AMP servers on Aug 31 2006, up to 144 traces per destination. Filtered traces are provided in [source].trace files where source is the vantage point. Intermediate files, DNS names, AS numbers, and alias pairs are provided as well. |
| Motivation | Obtain a realistic network map from the Internet. |

| Description | This collection contain a router level Internet map. The original path traces, 2.3M path traces, are obtained from 130 AMP servers. - As the first step, we combined all path traces collected on 31 Aug 2006 to obtain unique ones since we had repeated traces to the same destination, up to 144 trace per destination. Besides, we discarded path traces appearing less than 10 times to filter errornous traces due to transient conditions in the Internet. After this step, we had 19.4K unique path traces and 4K IP addresses.
- During combination, we resolved anonymou routers, routers that did not return an IP. 436K of stars reduced to 616 using anonymous router resolution approaches.
- We resolved IP alisaes using both probing based ally tool and analytical alias resolution tool APAR.
- Using ally tool we probed 1.7M pairs of IP addresses. Next we, identified IP addresses that ally reported as alias and performed a second probing on them to increase our confidence. Finally, we obtained 1884 alias pairs using ally.
- For APAR tool, we pinged 3905 IP addresses to abtain distance information. Using APAR, we obtained 2034 alis pairs.
- Finally, we verified aliased IPs using DNS names and AS-level map of traces.
- Overall, we obtained a network map of 2376 nodes where 335 of them were anonymous routers.
Network-map file contains the anonymized network as a list of edges ( Network-map-20060831). Trace files [source].trace contain all traces from the source to all destinations seperated by header. Each header, starting with '#', indicates destination, count and lenght and is the form of # [destination] Count: [x] Length: [y] - If there are alternate paths to the same [destination] a suffix of '_n' is appended to the [destination].
- The count [x] is the number of times the path is observed. It may be non-integer when a subpath is combined to a longer one. In that case, we took the ratio of lengths into consideration when deciding for the combined count.
- Length [y] is the length of trace.
- IP addresses starting with "0.0.0." are in fact a star.
- IP addresses starting with "0." are non-global IP addresses and were handled similar to stars.
